We have an apprenticeship opportunity in our environmental services team where you’ll be working alongside experienced colleagues to gain valuable skills whilst studying for a recognised qualification in horticulture. Working with supervision, to undertake a full range of general grounds maintenance duties.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Carry out, supervised, the full range of grounds maintenance activities such as, grass cutting, shrub pruning, bedding planting etc to the requested frequency and standard
  • Liaise with the Supervisor or Team Leader on a frequent basis to ensure that all these activities are carried out within the set guidelines of the specification and/or law, and horticultural good practice
  • Ensure that all paperwork is completed on time and all inspection forms or work records are correct and up to date
  • Inspect all vehicles and plant daily and ensure that any defects are appropriately reported to the Transport Business Unit and line manager and all related records, logs or reports are kept or shared in line with Council procedures
  • Assist is some operations where the post holder has not got the appropriate skills or experience. This will be carried out working alongside a competent person who either has the qualifications or experience to do so

Please note:

  • This is an outdoor based role
  • Exposure to all weather conditions, traffic conditions, hazards connected with exposure to dirt, dust and noise
  • Will involve handing of chemicals, and contact with unknown substances and materials
  • Contact with the public with risk of challenge or abusive behaviour
  • The post requires a lot of walking standing, bending, and lifting throughout the day

  • This role requires a uniform to be worn
  • This role may be required to operate specific pieces of equipment up to an individual value of £60,000 for which certificates or specialist training is required
  • We offer a competitive starting salary of £6.24 per hour, and after completing your first year this will increase to £6.76 per hour or the national minimum wage for your age if this is greater

Skills Required

  • Be able to lift 20kg load from ground level to 1m high platform
  • Able to work in outdoor environment in all types of weather
  • Ability to establish a good working relationship with a range of people
  • Good oral and written communication skills

Qualifications Required

  • GCSE English and maths Grade D/3 and above or equivalent

  • Pa1 Pa6
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Apprentices without Level 2 English & maths must achieve Level 1 and take the test for Level 2 prior to taking their End Point Assessment
