Job Description

The Leigh UTC Academy are looking for a Design and Technology Technician (Apprenticeship) to join the academy and to support the teaching and learning of students within this broad department.


Provide a comprehensive technical service to teaching staff in the Design Department. Responsible for: Under the direction of the Principal, the postholder will be responsible for duties covering apparatus and materials for experiments, initiating orders, health and safety of practical equipment and working areas and IT support.

Relationships: Working with the Design & Technology Teachers under the direction of the Subject Leader. Accountable to: Faculty Leader


  • Organise materials, ingredients and tools in the Faculty
  • Organise and catalogue books in Faculty
  • Assisting with any exhibitions and displays and moderation of work
  • To provide support for the teacher during practical lessons this will include food lessons
  • Under the direction of the Faculty Leader, ensure that all Health & safety requirements are met
  • To assist teaching staff in promoting and raising the profile of D&T and Food Technology within and outside the Academy
  • Work as part of a team within the Design and Technology faculty assisting each other as and when required
  • To undertake such other tasks relevant to the work of the Design Technology faculty or the needs of the school as they may arise
  • Risk assessments in accordance with the Design and Technology association e.g. classrooms, processes and machinery
  • Check large machinery regularly
  • Regular local exhaust ventilation(LEV) tests
  • Maintenance of band saws
  • Replacement of belts/sanding discs
  • Checking of hand tools and replacing/sharpening blades
  • Laser cutter maintenance e.g mirror cleaning
  • Maintenance of portable power tools e.g drills and sanding machines

Permanent role may be offered following successful completion of apprenticeship.

Skills Required

  • Confident in the use of ICT
  • Practical/hands-on experience is desirable but not a necessity

Qualities Required

  • Ability to show initiative and to prioritise one’s own work and that of others
  • Ability to work as part of a team and individually
  • Self-motivating with the ability to multitask
  • Accreditation of Design and Technology Health and Safety Training standards or willing to be trained in these standards

Qualifications Required

  • Maths and English GCSE at grade C/4 or above or equivalent qualification
  • A Level or equivalent qualification in one or more Design and Technology-related subjects

Training Provided

Training is to be be provided by LAT Apprenticeships and will follow the level 3 Engineering Technician - Technical Support Technician pathway

This apprenticeship is typically 42 months duration and training will be delivered as day release once a week at The Leigh UTC.
