While working for South West Coaches, a growing family business, the success candidates will find themselves working in a team on a variety of PCV, HGV and PSV vehicles (vans, minibuses, and coaches).
As an Apprentice Commercial Vehicle Mechanic, you will be undertaking a variety of duties to enable you to develop your industry knowledge and skills to support with completing your apprenticeship qualification and becoming a qualified Commercial Vehicle Mechanic.
Your day to day duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Safety inspections, defect rectification, fault finding and general service-related maintenance
- Cleanliness of the workshop and site
- Assisting other technicians with vehicle maintenance, repairs, and servicing
- Assisting with keeping the workshop clean and tidy
- Shadowing workplace mentor for a variety of tasks
- Develop and build manual skills
- Learning to maintain and repair vehicles
- Speaking with customers to ensure they are aware of work being carried out on their vehicle
- Take bookings, payments, and other basic office administration, as required
Joining a family business means that you will focus your time on a fleet of vehicles you will get to now. One of the benefits you will find is that you will be able to work on various vehicles makes, Volvo, Scania, MAN, Cummins, and Mercedes.
Your Working Week:
South West Coaches operate on a shift pattern and their shifts consist of the following times:
- 06:00 - 15:00
- 08:00 - 17:00
- 11:00 - 20:00
Shift patterns can be discussed in more detail at interview, if required.
Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there could be the possibility of full-time employment and the chance to undertake further industry qualifications to better your knowledge and skills.
As stated in the 'Training Provided' section of the advert, you will be required to attend Paragon Skills Automotive Academy in Bournemouth, Dorset for a 1-week block release session every 5 weeks.
Your accommodation costs will be covered by South West Coaches and they will pay your expenses for staying in Dorset. It is your responsibility as the apprentice to ensure you can get to the academy reliably and attend all block release sessions to stay on track with all apprenticeship work.
The ideal candidate should have a good communication skill, a keen and enthusiastic manner towards learning and demonstrate a willingness to progress within the apprenticeship.

There are no previous industry relevant qualifications required for this apprenticeship, however the successful candidate should have a good level of maths and English.
If you do not have the desired grades, you will complete Functional Skills alongside the apprenticeship with our tutors in the academy.
Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician apprenticeship standard, which includes:
- Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English (if required)
- End-Point Assessment (EPA)
Your training will be a split combination between classroom and work-based learning with your employer. Paragon Skills have a well-developed automotive academy in both light vehicle and heavy vehicle with a multi-functioning workshop to undertake servicing, repairs, and diagnostics.
We deliver high quality training programmes to learners across the South Coast by our experienced industry lead personal tutors. You will attend Paragon Skills automotive academy for 1 week every 5 weeks on a block release basis to undertake all elements of your practical and theory coursework to work towards your apprenticeship qualification.
