Job Description

Derbyshire County Council is the Lead Local Flood Authority and as an Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician within the Flood Risk Management Team you will work with the team supporting various aspects of Flood Risk Management.


Purpose of this role:

As an Apprentice Civil Engineering Technician within the Flood Risk Management Team you will provide technical advice and support on all aspects of Flood Risk Management.

Key relationships:

  • Undertake duties as agreed with your mentor and under the direct supervision and instruction of the relevant workplace supervisor
  • Derbyshire Adult Community Education Services (DACES) apprenticeship training provider
  • Departmental managers and colleagues, employees and customers
  • External agencies, Contractors and Sub-Contractors and the public

Key result areas include:

  • Achieving all elements of the relevant apprenticeship qualification including attaining the required level of functional skills competence in English, Mathematics and ICT (as appropriate)
  • Complying with the policies and legal requirements including Health and Safety, Child Protection and Safeguarding, Equality and Human Rights, Data Protection Act, Risk Management and Financial Regulations
  • Taking responsibility for one’s own personal and workplace development and continually update as necessary
  • Assist with the collection, processing, analysis, storing and retrieval of data and the use of appropriate software
  • Assist with the provision of general technical support under the guidance of senior technicians and project engineers
  • Follow established procedure/process ensuring completion and storage of relevant documentation/records under line management direction
  • Assist with surveys, design preparation, procurement procedures, and production of drawings
  • Respond to routine enquiries from internal colleagues
  • Build knowledge and awareness of activities of others related to the role

We offer an excellent work based training programme and you will be given lots of support to help you complete your apprenticeship qualification, whilst gaining experience working for the Council.

Qualifications Required

5 GCSEs at grade 9-4/A*-C or equivalent including mathematics (grade 5/6 or B), English and Science.

Training Provided

The Apprenticeship Scheme is run in conjunction with a training provider to ensure that you are supported by a first class training programme, which will enable you to achieve the required apprenticeship: 

  • Civil Engineering Technician Level 3 Standard
  • Functional Skills in maths and English if required
