Job Description

The Canal & River Trust is among the UK’s biggest charities, looking after 2,000 miles of canals, rivers docks and reservoirs; together with museums, archives and the country’s third largest collection of protected historic buildings. We are looking to recruit an Apprentice Carpenter/ Joiner to join our team at one of two lock gate workshops.

Responsibilities

What will the apprentice be doing?

The apprentice will work in a busy workshop environment, to learn the traditional skills of lock gate manufacturing.

This includes joinery and carpentry skills, general housekeeping and basic engineering tasks.

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?

We are pleased to be partnered with the Building Craft College, based in Stratford, London.

Whilst off-the-job, you will attend college on a block release timetable, this means that you’ll go to college for week blocks of training during the academic year, staying in a local hotel to the college with other apprentices from the Trust and other employers‘ apprentices.

Your manager and the Apprenticeships Site Supervisor will support you throughout your off and on the job training.

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?

We are fully committed to support all of our apprentices during their training. We truly value their contribution to the Trust, and plan our recruitment to match to progression opportunities. Once the apprenticeship is completed and your work on site is to a satisfactory level, we aim to offer ongoing permanent employment opportunities with us.
