This apprenticeship programme offers the prospect to learn within a global company gaining technical and research skills whilst working closely alongside industry experts and professionals. In addition to gaining valuable work experience you will have the opportunity to study towards a Chemical Sciences degree at The University of Kent whilst earning a competitive salary.
The combination of workplace training and educational study will ensure that you develop the skills and qualifications to provide excellent prospects for your future scientific career.
You will be based within our Oncology research team 4 days a week (5th day to be dedicated to study) and will involve the identification, purity assessment and characterisation of new drug compounds using a range of state-of-the art instrumentation. You'll gain a unique insight into AstraZeneca’s world-leading scientific research leading to the discovery of a new generation of cancer treatments.
You will be enrolled to study a foundation degree in Applied Chemical Sciences by distance learning at the University of Kent which should be completed during this contract.
There is also an option to extend this initial contract for a further 21 months providing the opportunity to complete an honours degree in Applied Chemical Sciences.
Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).

The apprentice must be able to demonstrate the required attitudes, behaviours and interpersonal skills associated with the professional workplace.
The apprentice must be willing to commit an amount of personal time to study.

- Five GCSEs at grades A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent) including maths, English and science
- 2 A-Levels including grade B or above (or equivalent) in Chemistry (96 UCAS points on the 2018 tariff)
Degree level Laboratory Scientist apprenticeship standard.
You’ll receive an Apprenticeship Training Plan that describes the training you need. It may include a mixture of external and internal training that will ensure that you are fully competent by the end of the programme. You’ll gain transferable core skills and knowledge, and specific skills tailored to the individual requirements of the role.
You’ll be working towards a Level 5 qualification. Typically, this will be a Foundation Degree in Applied Chemical Sciences. There is also a future option to extend your apprenticeship within AstraZeneca to study for a further 2 years and gain an Honours degree scientific qualification.
Additionally, the apprenticeship is recognised by the relevant professional bodies at Registered Scientist (RSci) level.
