This is a great opportunity to work across 2 different teams including Elections and Land charges. As part of a team you will have the chance to find out about different areas of the business and learn new skills. This is a fantastic starting point for an enthusiastic individual who has good customer service and IT skills.


We are looking to recruit a friendly and enthusiastic apprentice to join our busy Electoral Services and Local Land Charges Team.

Elections duties include:

  • Processing applications to register to vote
  • Processing postal and proxy vote applications
  • Dealing with customer enquiries by telephone or email
  • Providing admin support to the team in delivering local and national elections
  • Providing support in the lead up to election day and at the counting of votes

Local Land Charges duties include:

  • Processing applications for property searches where people move house
  • Making copies of documents and sending information to customers
  • Using databases and maps and plans
  • Dealing with customer enquiries by telephone or email

Future Prospects

Although we do not guarantee employment after this training, many of our apprentices have successfully gained employment with City Council. We aim to support as many apprentices as possible into roles after this training.

Skills Required

  • Ability to effectively use a range of IT packages including Microsoft office and bespoke database systems
  • The ability to accurately interpret and input data
  • Be able to work within Council guidelines when dealing with confidential information
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service, face to face, by telephone and by email
  • Ability to demonstrate problem solving and organisational skills
  • Ability to sort forms into categories, scan, process and archive applications for registration, postal votes and search applications
  • Demonstrate ability to manage time and prioritise workload
  • An understanding of Equalities issues

Qualities Required

  • Good oral communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to relate effectively to people at differing levels inside and external to the Council
  • Willingness to be flexible generally in terms of out of hours working particularly in the lead up to key events
  • Able to work as part of a team to deliver excellent services

Qualifications Required

Maths and English Grade 4,  A-C/8-4 or equivalent.

Training Provided

Training will be carried out at Derby Adult Learning Service.

  • Functional skills in maths and English (if required)
