Joining the Royal Navy on the Accelerated Apprentice Scheme (Weapon Engineering) means accelerating your training and development within one of our most elite teams.
You’ll be fast-tracked to real responsibility, getting your hands on some of the most advanced kit on the planet, and guaranteeing your warship’s performance as a state-of-the-art fighting machine.
Unlike comparable civilian roles, you’ll quickly find yourself in charge of some of the most sophisticated electronic equipment in existence, as you join as a Probationary Leading Hand – two ranks higher than most Engineering Technicians.
You’ll start your career as a probationary Leading Engineering Technician. Providing you meet the relevant criteria you will have the opportunity to be promoted to Petty Officer Technician and beyond. If you show the right commitment, skills and academic ability, you may also have the chance to become a Commissioned Officer. You’ll be chosen for promotion on merit, so if you work hard, you can quickly rise through the ranks.
Your Royal Navy career begins with 10 weeks’ basic training at HMS Raleigh, a shore base near Plymouth. The discipline, teamwork, organisational, fire-fighting and weapon-handling skills you’ll learn here will stay with you right through your Royal Navy career. Aim to get yourself as fit as you can before you arrive as the training is intense and physically demanding. Ensure you can swim before you join as there’s also a swimming test. You will be embarking on one of the country’s top apprenticeship schemes, meaning training will be a constant feature of your time with us. As well as helping you develop your Royal Navy career, everything you achieve will be valued by a future civilian employer and has been recognised by the Professional Institutions so that it can streamline your route to registering as an EngTech or an IEng. We are looking for team players, problem-solvers with a passion for working with the latest equipment and technology who are quick thinkers, with an affinity for maths and engineering.
You’ll need commitment, enthusiasm and common sense coupled with a sense of adventure. Strong teamwork is essential as you work with your shipmates to solve complex problems in unique and challenging environments, all over the world.
A National Qualifications Framework Level 2 (GCSE or equivalent) in English, Mathematics and Science as a minimum (all must be A*-C [grade 4-9] or equivalent).
- A National Qualifications Framework Level 3 Diploma (with a minimum grade of ‘Merit’) in engineering, Aeronautical, electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
- A Levels in both Mathematics and Physics grade D or higher.
You will need to pass a Recruit Test and are should be in a good state of health and fitness.
You must be between 17 and 25 when you start training and a UK resident for at least 5 years holding a UK passport. British, British Dual Citizenship applicants welcome.
At the end of your Apprenticeship training you will have achieved:
- Advanced apprenticeship in Engineering Manufacture (Engineering Maintenance)
- An opportunity to complete a foundation degree
Training will be a constant feature of your time with us. We’ll help you gain academic qualifications like GCSEs, A-levels, even a degree. You can also work towards NVQs and other vocational awards. As well as helping you develop your Royal Navy career, everything you achieve will be recognised and valued by a future civilian employer.
